The Super Bowl is Christmas morning for bettors. It’s by far the most gambled on sporting event in the world and has continued to open wallets (and break hearts) year-after-year.
Whether you’re a line-hunting shark or just learned what a parlay is, chances are you’re gonna throw some cash on the game. Betting on the Super Bowl has quadrupled since 2019, with a record US$23 billion wagered on the Chief’s overtime win last year. This year, about US$25 billion in bets are expected to be placed.
Unless you’re putting the house on the Gatorade colour, there can be a method to the madness...
Careful hammering over’s for player props:
Over’s on prop totals for star players always get a lot of interest in the SB, especially in the week before the game. That volume can send prop lines well above their opening numbers and quickly erase any value.
If you’re taking the underdog, do it early:
First time bettors, which flock to sportsbooks like flies on Super Bowl Sunday, love taking the dog to win. That means your best value if you’re feeling the Eagles is likely early.
Betting the MVP over moneyline can pay off:
Instead of just picking the winner, you can roll the dice and take the MVP line for a little odds boost. Chances are if you’re going with the Chiefs, Mahomes will be your guy. Eagles? Saquon Barkley could be a nice bet.
If you’re feeling a little more dangerous after a few pints, you can always flirt with some of the more outrageous prop bets:
The coin toss:
About half of the time, it works every time. Gut call, but three of the last four years have been Heads. Gotta think Tails is due.
The number of beers sold:
The over/under is currently at 120,000 beers sold. Caesars Superdome has 76,468 seats — about two beers per person, easy money.
Last but not least...
Will any coach or player cry during the national anthem:
Absolute lock, Chris Jones cried twice in last week’s game alone.
Let the games begin.
